It happened at around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, police said.

According to detectives, members of the Gang Investigations Squad, as part of the Hempstead Initiative, were on patrol when they observed a disturbance on the corner of Princeton Avenue and Bennett Avenue.

As the detectives approached the disturbance, they saw a man reach for his waistband and flee on foot westbound on Princeton Avenue, police said.

During the pursuit, the man was observed throwing a black handgun into the rear yard of a residence on Stewart Avenue before being taken into custody on Wellesley Avenue, according to police.

Assisting detectives secured the handgun and continued their investigation, which determined that just prior to police arrival, the victim attempted to intervene in an argument the suspect, Rashon Williams, 25, was having with an unknown female, said police.

The victim told Williams to leave the woman alone and he was going to call 911, police said. Williams then pointed a gun and fired one shot at the victim just narrowly missing him, police said.

Williams has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

He was arraigned on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2 at First District Court in Hempstead.
